Mixed Use:

Award winning and heritage listed Solar Energy Information Centre (South Perth).

This is a mixed professional offices and innovation display space for Solar Energy applications. At a time when knowledge and awareness of solar energy was low but growing (the 1980s), Mr Baverstock received support and input from marketing strategist and businessmen to secure a building in South Perth. It won the Australian Design Award in 1990 and the National Energy Award in 1993. It is heritage listed by the City of South Perth: PDF of the listing

Maximising use of recycled materials:

Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre (Melville WA)

Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre demonstrates sustainable living options. Set within an urban bushland reserve which contains sensitive lake and wetland areas, the venue reduces carbon output and minimises environmental impact through sustainable building technology.

The climate sensitive and solar passive design features of the Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre reduce the requirement for active heating and artificial lighting (during Winter), and active cooling of a building (during Summer). Retrofitting:

The Russell Centre – Perth CBD

Ecotect-Architects designed a conversion for The Russell Centre to retrofit it as a commercially viable solar efficient office building. Retrofit additions include an internal shade-controlled solarium and a series of external shade awnings designed to reflect light upwards into the building. Resulting heat loads and light levels were kept uniform in the building and external skin thermal loading was reduced by 85%. The project viability was assessed using a discounted cashflow approach to energy savings and lifecycle costing.
